Chance Randomness, or the lack of a pattern or predictability in events.

 

Clinical trial A rigorously controlled test of a new treatment (e.g. drug or medical device) on human subjects.

 

Confounding variable Something other than the treatment being studied that can affect the measured outcome of a trial.
